Homemade Apple Sauce
Apple sauce is the gateway to cooking from scratch. Please don’t be intimidated making apple sauce.
It is so easy, you don’t need practice, and you don’t have to work up to getting it right.
All you need is a 5lbs bag of apples and a wee bit of motivation. I promise you will come out of this experience feeling like a rock star!
My kids in particular aren’t big apple sauce in a bowl eaters. It’s very seldom that someone asks for a bowl of apple sauce. So why do I make it? It is a main ingredient in our homemade fruit roll ups.
This recipe is so easy, you don’t have to add anything to it but a splash of lemon juice and cinnamon.
Here’s what you will need
Apples, a bunch of apples. I use Macintosh apples because I love them. I know some recipes say to only use a certain type of apple, but this is My Not So Pioneer Life and I’ll use whatever apple I see fit!!
First thing to do is to peel, core and cut your apples.
Place your apples in a large pot, add 2 tbsp of lemon juice, 1/2 cup of water and cook partially covered on medium low stirring here and there until the apples are soft. Anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.
Once the apples are cooked you can either mash them with a potato masher, put them through a food mill or use an immersion blender.
On this particular day, I used our food mill because I had some small hands helping.
After you have mashed, milled or blended the apples you can add the cinnamon to taste.
Depending on how much you have made (the recipe doubles easily) you may have to think about storage. This depends on how many mouths are watering at this very moment.
You can store your apple sauce in the fridge for a week or two in a sealed container. I like to can my apple sauce just so it doesn’t take up room in the fridge. You can also put your apple sauce in clean mason jars and freeze it if canning is not on your agenda.
There you go! You made apple sauce from scratch all by yourself!!
